Job Title: Utilities Service Worker
Department: Public Works- Utilities
Type of position: Full-time
Pay Rate: $19-$20/Hr. based on qualifications.
Hours: 40/week Nonexempt
On-Call Rotation (after hours)
JOB DESCRIPTION: UTILITY WORKER
Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and some skilled manual tasks in the construction, repair and maintenance of water, streets, sewer, and public works facilities; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This job classification requires knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in Public Works water, street maintenance, building and grounds maintenance and sewer assignments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Operates various equipment involved in the maintenance of streets, sewers, and water distribution system.
- Operates dump trucks, loaders, and rollers.
- Operates small equipment such as wrenches, hammers, banding tools, shovels, post hole diggers, and level lutes.
- Operates power tools such as air compressors, jack hammers, wet tapping machines, and paint spraying equipment.
- Spreads and rakes gravel or asphalt in the patching and resurfacing of streets.
- Applies sealant to pavement cracks.
- Backs up trucks to spread chips.
- Paints traffic lines and legends.
- Installs and repairs traffic signs.
- Collects water samples.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Assists with repairing or replacing water lines, water valves, water meters, and fire hydrants.
- Assists with making water taps and maintaining water pumping stations.
- Assists with repairing sewer lines, flushing sewer lines, and cleaning catch basins.
- May perform some tasks regularly assigned to senior level classes, particularly on a training basis.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION
Graduation from high school or possession of a recognized equivalent diploma. One (1) year of maintenance or construction experience is preferred. A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Must possess and maintain a Florida driver’s license (Class B Minimum).
LICENSES AND REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid Florida motor vehicle operator’s license for vehicles to be operated. Must have a CDL class B License.

Work practices governing the maintenance and construction of municipal facilities such as streets, sewers, and water lines.

- Work in a cold, wet or damp environment
- Work with and in moving vehicles
- Work on ladders, scaffolds, and aerial lifts;
- Inspect service, maintain and/or operate machinery and power equipment
- Push, pull, lift and carry items weighing up to 90 pounds
- Walk, stand, sit, kneel, crawl, bend and climb repetitively or over a long period of time
- Reach above shoulder height and use both hands
- Use motor skills to manipulate small or fragile objects
- Use arms and legs repetitively
- Visually distinguish objects and colors
- Hear conversational voices at normal level
- Work in noisy environments
